Young Filipino Takes Top Prize at ASEAN-IPR Cybersecurity Essay-Writing Competition

Filipino researcher Hammil Rainard D. Distor was hailed the champion of the 2024 ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) Cybersecurity Essay Writing Competition in a ceremony in Bangkok, Thailand, on 26 February 2025.

His essay, entitled “Psybersecurity, Empowering Youth to Defend Data in a Digital World” was selected among hundreds of entries from all over ASEAN and Timor Leste. Another essay from the Philippines, “Beyond the Hashtags and Superficialities: A Call to Action for Gender Inclusive Safe Spaces in Cyberspace” by Aphaia Katherine D. Fajardo, was recognized among the top entries in the competition.

The contest was part of the ASEAN-IPR Regional Conference on Cybersecurity and the Role of Information Technology in Fostering a Culture of Peace in ASEAN, an event organized by ASEAN-IPR with support from the Republic of Korea. The conference was held on 24-26 February 2025 and gathered experts on and advocates for peace through cybersecurity from the region and beyond.

The Philippine Mission participated in the ASEAN-Japan Food Fair

The Philippine Mission participated in the ASEAN-Japan Food Fair held on 14 February 2025 at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat.

The Philippines presented festive Filipino favorites such as crema de fruta, cathedral window jelly, polvoron, and dried mangoes at the food event hosted by the Japanese Mission to ASEAN.

Entitled "Experience Japanese Food Culture: Savour the Authentic Flavour of Japan," the event featured traditional Japanese food as well as food associated with fun and celebration from ASEAN and Timor Leste.

PH Blue Economy ventures showcase winning projects at ASEAN Blue Innovation EXPO and Business Matching Event

Seven winning projects from the Philippines were among the blue economy innovations showcased at the ASEAN Blue Innovation and Business Matching Expo held on 19 February 2025 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Philippines-based Agrabah Ventures, Aquagentech, OBX Solutions, PCX Solutions, Rezbin, the Aquaculture Group, and the Samadhana Institute were among the 60 winners of the ASEAN Blue Innovation Challenge, a competition hosted by ASEAN, the United Nations Development Programme and the government of Japan that aims to spark inclusive and sustainable blue economy innovation from startups, MSMEs, universities, and NGOs throughout ASEAN and Timor-Leste.

The expo highlighted projects tackling key challenges within the blue economy sector, including sustainable fisheries, marine plastic pollution, eco-tourism, and climate resilience. The expo gave the winners an opportunity to network with investors, policymakers, industry leaders, and other innovators, unlocking opportunities for partnerships and funding.

Philippines Co-chairs ASEAN-India Joint Cooperation Meet

The Philippine Mission to ASEAN, represented by Chargé d'Affaires, a.i. Elizabeth T. Te, co-chaired the 25th ASEAN-India Joint Cooperation Committee Meeting on 14 February 2025 at the ASEAN Headquarters/ASEAN Secretariat. The meeting highlighted achievements in ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations over the past year, the full implementation of the ASEAN-India Plan of Action (2021-2025), and ways to further deepen cooperation between ASEAN and India under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
