4 June 2021, Jakarta. – The Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) held a meeting with High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission (HR/VP), Josep Borrell Fontelles, on 3 June 2021 at the Nusantara Hall, ASEAN Secretariat.

In his remarks, HR/VP Borrell highlighted the EU’s commitment to accelerating vaccine sharing to support countries, adding that “We aim to donate at least 100 million doses by the end of the year.” 

The European Union and its Member States, as “Team Europe,” had mobilized more than EUR 800 million to support ASEAN and its Member States to support ASEAN’s response to COVID-19.  The EU provided an additional EUR 20 million to support WHO activities in the region. 

Noting that the pandemic is accelerating the shift in the world’s center of gravity to the Indo-Pacific, he highlighted that the EU has a big stake in the region and underscored that the EU’s Strategy for Cooperation is very close to the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.

Ambassador and Permanent Representative Noel Servigon said in his remarks that the Philippines recognizes the importance of the preservation of biodiversity in preventing the spread of infectious diseases from animals, and welcomed the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. He also looked forward to the EU’s further cooperation with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity. 

As the incoming Country Coordinator of the ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations, Permanent Representative Servigon reiterated the Philippines’ priorities as conveyed by Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. during the 23rd ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting on 1 December 2020. These priorities are gender justice, climate action, environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, maritime cooperation, sustainable development goals, migration, digital solutions and cybersecurity in promoting cooperation between ASEAN and the EU.
