MANILA 12 October 2022 – President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., underscored the country’s initiatives and tangible efforts for women’s economic empowerment in his remarks at the 2nd ASEAN Women Leaders’ Summit: Building a More Sustainable, Inclusive and Resilient Future: Unlocking Women’s Entrepreneurship in ASEAN hosted by Cambodia on 12 October 2022 via videoconference.
“The Philippines has committed concrete actions for women’s economic empowerment by ensuring equal access to education, training employment and opportunities; cultivating safe spaces in business and in the workplace; supporting women’s transition from the informal to the formal economy; promoting e-commerce and digitalization; and crafting policies that support work-life balance and co-responsibility for unpaid care and domestic work”, President Marcos Jr. said.
The President was joined by Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Maria Antonia Yulo-Loyzaga. A staunch advocate of women’s rights, Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga emphasized the need to advance opportunities in unlocking, sustaining, protecting, and growing women’s entrepreneurship in the ASEAN region, including access to financial literacy programs and fintech; access to markets enabled by private sector and CSOs; access to bonding and bridging social capital networks; and access to gender-focused representation in law, policy, and programs.
Secretary Yulo-Loyzaga stressed that despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Philippines maintained its position as a global leader in the advancement of women based on the number of Filipina women business leaders and professionals.
The 2nd ASEAN Women Leaders’ Summit is a follow-up to the inaugural Summit hosted by Vietnam in 2020. END
