8 August 2018 – As part of the celebration of the 51st Anniversary of ASEAN, the ASEAN Foundation launched a partnership with the Maybank Foundation entitled Empowering Youths Across ASEAN through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement. The launch was attended by Ambassadors, ASEAN Secretariat officials, Maybank Group representatives and students.

This initiative will equip and inspire talented youths from all ten ASEAN Member States to become agents of positive change by providing a platform to learn, contribute to and advocate for solutions to important development issues. Following an intensive capacity-building workshop, the youths will be deployed to various ASEAN countries where they will begin to implement their own visions and create lasting social impact.

Gracing the occasion was ASEAN-Secretary-General Dato Lim Jock Hoi who commended the initiative for targeting the very important sector of the youth, which comprises sixty per cent of ASEAN. He expressed the hope that the initiative “will not only be a way for young people to contribute to the ASEAN Community, but also be an incredible force in connecting and impacting young people and communities across ASEAN.”

In her remarks, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to ASEAN and Chair of the ASEAN Foundation Board of Trustees, Ambassador Elizabeth P. Buensuceso warmly noted that the “ASEAN Foundation family is proud to partner with Maybank Foundation to catalyze a generation of change-makers and bring greater prosperity to the ASEAN community of nations.” She further emphasized that the program will help achieve the objectives of enhancing interaction among different stakeholders and building a stronger ASEAN community.
