19 April 2017 – H.E. Elizabeth P. Buensuceso, Philippine Permanent Representative to ASEAN and Chair of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR), met with United Nations Senior Official, Assistant Secretary-General (ASG) for Political Affairs Mr. Miroslav Jenca, to discuss how to further strengthen the ASEAN-UN partnership and advance common interests.  The two officials discussed a number of ASEAN-UN joint initiatives being planned in support of the priorities of Philippine Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2017, particularly in the areas of maritime security and cooperation, good governance, electoral processes and the prevention of violent extremism.  

 

The relationship between ASEAN and the United Nations began in the 1970s through initial cooperation with the UN Development Programme (UNDP). The Joint Declaration of the Comprehensive Partnership between ASEAN and the UN, which strengthened the framework of ASEAN-UN cooperation, was adopted by the 4th ASEAN-UN Summit held on 19 November 2011 in Bali, Indonesia.
