U.S. Vice President Mike Pence met with the members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives to ASEAN (CPR) at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta on 20 April 2017, emphasizing that the United States will deepen and build on its strategic relations with ASEAN.

Vice President Pence also announced that U.S. President Donald Trump will travel to the Philippines in November to attend the ASEAN-U.S. Summit and the East Asia Summit and to Vietnam to participate in the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting.

Vice President Pence conveyed President Trump’s greetings to ASEAN on its 50th anniversary this year. He added that ASEAN has contributed to the fostering of peace, security, and economic integration in the region.

Citing the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-U.S. Dialogue Relations this year, Vice President Pence described the ASEAN-U.S. relations as a strategic partnership that is a boon diplomatically and economically to all nations. He described current ASEAN-U.S. economic ties as “very impressive”, saying that U.S. total investments in the region is bigger than those of China, Japan, India and South Korea combined.

Speaking on behalf of the CPR, Ambassador Elizabeth P. Buensuceso, Philippine Permanent Representative to ASEAN and Chair of the CPR, stressed that ASEAN and the U.S. are strategic and natural partners, which have large stake in the peace and security of the region.

Ambassador Buensuceso underscored that President Trump’s presence at the ASEAN-U.S. Summit in November in the Philippines is a signal to the world of the importance of the ASEAN-U.S. strategic partnership, especially as both sides are marking four decades of enduring relations.

She also informed that the Philippines, as chair of ASEAN, is ready to convert the usual annual ASEAN-U.S. Summit in November as a Commemorative Summit to highlight the significance of the 40th anniversary of ASEAN-U.S. dialogue relations this year.
